Ethiopia: African Development Bank Approves U.S. $115 Million for EthioKenya Electric Project

African Development Bank (AfDB) agreed to disburse an additional loan amounting to 115 million dollars to finance the construction of the multinational electric highway between Ethiopia and Kenya last week.

The project, which consists of 1,068km of high voltage direct current 500Kv transmission line and associated converter stations at Wolayta-Sodo (Ethiopia) and Suswa (Kenya) substations with a power transfer capacity of up to 2,000Mw, is expected to be commissioned in November 2017.

The integration of the power systems will enable the development of Ethiopia's large hydropower resources for the export market and address power shortages throughout the region. The project will position Ethiopia as the main powerhouse and Kenya as the main hub for power trade in the East African region. The line will also see Kenya achieve its plan of connecting an additional 870,000 households to the national grid by 2018.
