UNICEF Ethiopia appoints teenager its new goodwill ambassador

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Ethiopia on Friday officially appointed 15-year-old Hannah Godefa, a Canadian citizen with Ethiopian origin, its new Ambassador.

Hannah, a young humanitarian and advocate for children, has been chosen for the Ambassadorship because she demonstrated commitment and dedication to promote the rights of children and fearlessly talked about children's issues, said UNICEF.

The teenager, who resides in Canada, is the founder of "Pencil Mountain," a resource mobilization project on basic school supplies to support children in the remote areas of Ethiopia.

In the last seven years, Hannah's project has delivered 25,000 pencils to school children in Ethiopia followed by another batch of 400,000 including other basic school supplies.

At a signing ceremony in light of Hannah's appointment here in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Shadrack Omol, UNICEF Ethiopia Officer in Charge, noted that the teenager has shown a strong interest in humanitarian work through her fund raising activities and genuine interest in the issues of children, their education in particular.

"This has been clearly demonstrated while she was visiting the UNICEF-assisted programs starting the year 2011. She has inspired children and young people by her actions-passionately listening to their problems and also seeking solution," said the Officer in Charge.

In her remarks, Hannah said that the ambassadorship is an important venture for advocacy and promote children's education.

She promised to do everything in her power to be an advocate and representation of Ethiopian children through the provision of the new role from UNICEF.

Hannah expressed hope that through the new role, she can be a teacher and role model for children everywhere for years to come.
