Prime Minister Hailemariam has affirmed that Ethiopia would continue its support to the activities of the Forum of Federations.
In a meeting on Wednesday (November 7th) with Mr. Rupak Chattopadhyay, President of the Forum of Federations, the Prime Minister noted that Ethiopia was committed to the federal system that had produced a government of equality and justice for the peoples of Ethiopia. It would also continue to work to share its experiences with neighboring countries in promoting the concept of federalism.
The Prime Minister noted that as Ethiopia's federal system was relatively recent, it was keen to use the Forum of Federations as a means to learn best practices from countries which have older well-developed federal systems.
Mr. Chattopadhyay noted that the Forum had a strong interest to work in collaboration with Ethiopia. Stressing that Ethiopia was an example of democratic federal system, he said it could provide an exemplary role not only to African states but also more widely. It had shown that it could bring together nations, nationalities and peoples from very different backgrounds. He emphasized that Ethiopia in the past twenty years had registered significant transformation and change and become one of the fastest growing economic countries in the world.
This, Mr. Chattopadhyay, attributed to the implementation of the federal system. Ethiopia hosted the fifth world federalism forum couple of years ago in Addis Ababa. The Forum of Federations is an international organization bringing together many of the Federations of the world. The 5th International Conference on Federalism was held in Addis Ababa in December 2010 under the theme "Equality and Unity in Diversity for Development".
It was attended by over a thousand practitioners from all six continents.
