Ethiopia has No Intention of Monopolizing Nile Water : Alemayehu Tegenu


Khartoum - The Ethiopian Minister of Energy and Irrigation, Alemayehu Tegenu has denied any intention by his country to monopolize the water behind the Grand Millennium Development Dam inside the Ethiopian territories.

The Ethiopian official who was addressing a workshop organized by the International University of Africa in cooperation with the Ethiopian embassy in Khartoum on the Effects of the Millennium Dam on Sudan and Egypt denied his country's desire to threaten water security in any Nile basin country.

He stressed that his country adopts the policy of cooperation with Sudan and Egypt in this connection, adding that the dam will increase development opportunities, improvement of economy and trade exchange between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.

The minister pointed out that the water reserved behind the dam will increase the farmland in Egypt and Sudan, stressing that the arable land in Ethiopia is very small.

The Counselor of International University of Africa, Prof. Hassan Mekki has indicated s that the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is the largest artificial lake in Africa, where it stores 50 billion cubic meters of water, pointing out that Sudan is the biggest beneficiary of the dam.

Professor Mekki praised the efforts of Ethiopian ambassador in Sudan Abadi Zemo for the success of the symposium and to achieve positive results for the benefit of the peoples of Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt.
