Ethiopia and Qatar have signed a number of agreements to expand cooperation in a number of different areas.
The agreements were signed on Monday (November 5th) at the National Palace after a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hailemariam and Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani .
The Agreements covered the Establishment of a Joint Ministerial Commission, a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs to Conduct Bilateral Consultations and an Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation.
The two parties also agreed a draft on a Labor Agreement and agreed to finalize negotiations for Agreements on Double Taxation Avoidance and the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection. The respective Chambers of Commerce similarly exchanged a draft agreement on private sector cooperation. The Qatari delegation has expressed its interest in investing in Ethiopia in the areas of agricultural investment, horticulture, real estate, tourism, mining and meat exports.
The Ethiopian side briefed the Qatari delegation on the investment opportunities in Ethiopia; and the Ministry of Agriculture was tasked with the responsibility of providing relevant information regarding the laws and policies of Ethiopia on agricultural investment. The two sides have agreed to open embassies in Doha and Addis Ababa respectively. Prime Minister Hailemariam hosted a dinner at the presidential palace in honor of Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani, and members of the delegation on Sunday. The banquet was attended by a number of ministers, senior government officials and by Arab ambassadors accredited to Ethiopia. The Qatari delegation arrived here on Sunday (November 4th) for a two day official working visit to Ethiopia.
