On Sunday November 11th, in many places throughout the world everybody and everything falls silent for two minutes on Remembrance Day - at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
This is to remember the moment when the guns fell silent on November 11th, 1918, on the Western Front at the end of the more than four years fighting of the First World War I. It is a time to remember the 20 million people of every nation, faith and religion who were killed in that conflict - and the many millions more who have died in other conflicts up to the present day. The poppy is the emblem of that remembrance.
Yesterday, November 11th, the Service of Remembrance was as usual held at the Addis Ababa War Cemetery at Gulele. It was attended by veterans of the Ethiopian Patriotic Association and of the Ethiopian forces and by the representatives of many nations from around the world who gathered to lay wreaths on the memorial at the cemetery to remember those who have died fighting for their country:
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
